PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSE PRACTITIONER
Pronouns: he/him
Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, John Rower’s path to the Pacific Northwest began with a quiet curiosity about the West. After reading David James Duncan’s The River Why, a seed was planted that eventually drew him to the Oregon landscape. He arrived with a steady work ethic and a sense of service that has remained the foundation of his professional life.
John’s clinical approach is shaped by years of practical, hands-on experience. Before becoming a PMHNP, he spent fifteen years working in general labor, retail, and food service roles that grounded him in everyday realities and human connection. These experiences laid the foundation for his belief in showing up for one another. He began his healthcare career as an Air Force medic and later served as a Nurse Corps Officer in the Oregon Air National Guard. His civilian career has included work as a community health worker, an ED medic, an RN at the Oregon State Hospital, and an RN leader at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center. Throughout these roles, John has worked closely with individuals navigating addiction, acute psychiatric crises, and incarceration.
John’s philosophy is rooted in faith and the conviction that every person deserves to be seen and valued. He views the provider-patient relationship as a partnership built on trust and respect. He challenges the narrative that clinicians must remain emotionally distant, believing instead that presence, curiosity, and genuine engagement foster meaningful healing. His goal is to help individuals reconnect with themselves and take tangible steps toward recovery, however small those steps may begin.
Outside the clinic, John finds balance through manual labor inside and outside the home he shares with his wife and six children. He values the grounding nature of hands-on work and believes it mirrors the healing process itself. Meaningful change, in both life and practice, requires patience, presence, and a willingness to listen.
